Roots Un-Earthed Podcast
A podcast can be a valuable tool to flip the classroom. It is a resource that can follow them home reinforce a topic and/or to assist on homework. The lesson plan is designed for Junior High. It includes a brief description and history of American Folk Music followed an analysis of a traditional tune. Students will listen to examples of one song and how it has changed since the 20's. I talk them through some of the similarities and differences of the versions of the songs. This lesson would be followed by a project. The project would consist of students picking a song from a catalog that I've created. They would find four other versions, and create a time line. They would also write a reflection on how the songs have developed and changed from what they've listened to, and describe their favorite and why.
As a result of this lessons, students will be able to research the history of a song, describing similarities and differences and generating individual opinions.
